Ubisoft canceled a Reconstruction-era Assassin’s Creed game featuring a Black ex-enslaved protagonist due to political sensitivity concerns.
Ubisoft reportedly canceled an Assassin’s Creed game set during the U.S. Reconstruction era (1865–1877) in July 2024, according to multiple sources.
The project, in early development at Ubisoft Quebec, would have featured a Black former enslaved man as a protagonist who joins the Assassins to fight the Ku Klux Klan and racial injustice in the post-Civil War South.
The cancellation, attributed to concerns over political sensitivity amid a volatile U.S. climate and backlash over the Black samurai character Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, reportedly followed internal leadership decisions to avoid controversial themes.
Despite initial approval and team enthusiasm, the game was shelved without official confirmation from Ubisoft.
