The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens has fully reopened to the public on October 8, 2025, after a two-year closure and $8.5 million in renovations.
It initially reopened in July but closed again in August after a safety issue was found in a structural beam during roof repairs.
Following repairs, the center resumed operations with free fishing, complimentary gear and bait, and access to exhibits like the Wetlands Trail, Gallery Tanks, and hatchery tours.
The facility, operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife, is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with admission at $5.50 for adults and discounted rates for youth.
