Spain’s parliament passed a law banning arms exports to Israel, citing genocide allegations, effective immediately.
Spain’s parliament has approved a law formalizing an arms embargo on Israel, banning all exports and imports of defense equipment, technology, and military-related goods, including aviation fuel transit, and prohibiting advertising of products from Israeli settlements in Gaza and the West Bank.
The vote, 178 to 169, followed Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s declaration that Israel’s military actions in Gaza constitute genocide, aligning with international scrutiny of the war.
The law, which takes effect immediately, enshrines a ban already in place since October 2023 and allows exceptions for dual-use items if national interests are at stake.
Support from the far-left Podemos party was crucial to passage, and the vote was delayed to avoid the two-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack.
Israel condemned the move, having already withdrawn its ambassador after Spain recognized Palestinian statehood in 2024.
