Rajen Gohain, former BJP MP, resigned over party's perceived betrayal of Assam’s indigenous rights and promises.

Former Union Minister Rajen Gohain, a four-time MP from Nagaon, resigned from the BJP along with 17 other members from Upper and Central Assam, citing the party’s failure to keep promises to Assam’s people and its alleged betrayal of indigenous communities by allowing outsider settlement. Gohain, who served as Union Minister of State for Railways from 2016 to 2019 and represented Nagaon from 1999 to 2019, criticized the BJP for straying from its commitment to protect Assam’s cultural identity and native rights, particularly regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. His departure, effective immediately, reflects growing internal dissent within the party ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
