New Zealand's parliament paused Oct. 9, 2025, after an unsanctioned haka in the gallery disrupted proceedings.
New Zealand’s parliament was briefly suspended on October 9, 2025, after an unsanctioned haka erupted in the public gallery following the maiden speech of Te Pati Maori MP Oriini Kaipara.
After a planned Māori song, the haka began without prior approval, prompting Speaker Gerry Brownlee to halt proceedings, calling the act contemptuous and violating parliamentary rules requiring advance permission for such performances.
Brownlee announced an investigation into whether any party or MP had prior knowledge.
The incident follows a similar June event where Te Pati Maori members were suspended for a haka during a vote.
The haka, traditionally used to welcome or prepare warriors, is now also performed at major cultural and sporting events.
