Leila’s Hair Museum in Missouri closed after founder Leila Cohoon’s death, with her collection of historic hair art being transferred to major museums.
Leila’s Hair Museum in Independence, Missouri, has closed after 30 years, following the death of its founder, Leila Cohoon, in November 2024.
The museum housed over 3,000 pieces of historical hair art, including wreaths, jewelry, and watch bands made from human hair, some believed to come from U.S. presidents, Marilyn Monroe, and other notable figures.
Cohoon, a hairdresser, began collecting in 1956 after finding a hair-woven frame in an antique store, preserving a Victorian-era tradition that declined after the 1940s.
Her granddaughter, Lindsay Evans, is now rehoming the collection to major institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, as well as the National Museum of Funeral History, to honor her grandmother’s legacy and preserve the art form.
