A judge lets Bishop Barber’s lawsuit against AMC over denied disability seating go forward.
A federal judge has allowed Bishop William Barber II’s lawsuit against AMC Theaters to proceed, rejecting the company’s attempt to dismiss the case.
The lawsuit, filed in 2024, alleges that in December 2023, staff at an AMC theater in Greenville, North Carolina, demanded proof of disability before allowing Barber, who has ankylosing spondylitis, to use a special chair.
When he refused to provide documentation, staff called police, leading to his removal.
Barber, a prominent civil rights leader and theologian, claims the incident violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.
AMC has not publicly responded.
