Girls from disadvantaged backgrounds are half as likely to meet daily activity guidelines, with systemic inequities in school PE persisting.
A Youth Sport Trust survey of 17,971 students across 137 schools found girls facing multiple disadvantages—such as low income, special educational needs, or being Black or Asian—are half as likely as their peers to be active daily, with overall girls twice as likely as boys to miss the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity.
These girls also report lower confidence, less enjoyment in PE, and greater feelings of not belonging at school.
The findings, based on data collected in autumn 2024 and summer 2025, highlight persistent disparities tied to gender, income, ethnicity, and disability, with experts urging schools to address systemic barriers and biases in physical education.
