French caretaker PM Lecornu sees chance of budget deal by year-end, avoiding snap election.
French caretaker Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu expressed cautious optimism that a budget agreement could be reached by year-end, reducing the likelihood of a snap election amid a deepening political crisis.
Speaking after talks with conservative and centre-right parties and ahead of meetings with the Socialist Party, Lecornu said growing political willingness to pass a budget before December 31 could prevent parliamentary dissolution.
He aims to secure a deficit target of 4.7% to 5.0% for 2025, down from 5.4%, and will report findings to President Emmanuel Macron.
Lecornu, whose government resigned after just 14 hours—making it the shortest-lived in modern French history—said a path to stability remains possible despite intense pressure and opposition threats.
