Fiji launches needle syringe programs to combat a 200% HIV surge, aiming to prevent 25,000 future cases.
Fiji is launching Needle Syringe Programs (NSPs) after a 200% surge in new HIV cases in 2024, with 1,583 infections reported—174 among adolescents—and 126 HIV-related deaths.
Only 711 of the newly diagnosed sought treatment, and without intervention, up to 25,000 could be living with HIV in four years.
The government, backed by UNAIDS and health experts, says NSPs will reduce transmission without encouraging drug use, aligning with global goals to end new infections and AIDS deaths.
The program, approved by Cabinet, will be evaluated annually and supported by UN procurement to ensure consistent access to treatments.
