Derrick Groves, last fugitive from May’s New Orleans jailbreak, captured in Atlanta after months-long manhunt.
Derrick Groves, the final inmate to escape during a May 16 jailbreak at New Orleans' Orleans Justice Center, was captured on October 8, 2025, in Atlanta after a months-long manhunt.
The 28-year-old, a convicted murderer serving life without parole for a 2018 Mardi Gras shooting that killed two, was found in a crawl space beneath a house near Tyler Perry Studios following a SWAT operation involving gas and a police dog.
A tip from New Orleans Crimestoppers led to his arrest, and authorities seized a pistol and 15 pounds of marijuana at the scene.
All 10 escapees have now been recaptured, with nine apprehended within six weeks.
The jailbreak, which involved inmates escaping through a hole behind a toilet, prompted investigations into faulty locks, a missing guard, and possible inside help, including a maintenance worker arrested for allegedly disabling the toilet’s water supply.
Louisiana officials confirmed multiple individuals, including family and friends, were arrested for aiding the fugitives.
Groves is scheduled for an extradition hearing in Georgia.
