During the October 2025 long weekend, campers in New South Wales were fined $550 each for lighting campfires in state forests despite a solid fuel fire ban in effect since October 1.
Forestry Corporation ranger Paul Robb extinguished four fires across Sunny Corner, Vulcan, Jenolan, and Lisdale forests, stressing that ignorance is not a valid excuse and that all present can be fined.
Only gas appliances are allowed, and they must never be left unattended.
The ban, running from October 1 to April 30 unless conditions change, aims to prevent damage to pine plantations valued at $140,000 per hectare and protect public safety.
