The Supreme Court will hear a challenge over the allocation of Shiv Sena’s symbol to Eknath Shinde’s faction, with implications for upcoming 2026 local elections.
The Supreme Court will hear on November 12 a challenge by Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction over the Maharashtra Assembly speaker’s decision to assign the party’s 'bow and arrow' symbol to Eknath Shinde’s faction, with the hearing potentially extending to November 13.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal urged urgency due to upcoming local body elections in January 2026, arguing the speaker’s 2023 ruling contradicted a prior constitutional bench decision and unfairly favored defectors.
The speaker had previously rejected a plea to disqualify 16 MLAs from the Uddhav camp, strengthening Shinde’s coalition with BJP and NCP (Ajit Pawar group), which won 57 Assembly and seven Lok Sabha seats in 2024.
The case remains pending before the top court.
