Sri Lanka has declared all districts as African swine fever (ASF) risk areas effective October 3, 2025, implementing emergency measures to halt the spread of the deadly pig disease first detected in 2024. The regulations, valid for up to three months, ban pig slaughter, sale, storage, and processing without permits and restrict these activities to approved facilities under government oversight. The move aims to protect the swine population and agricultural sector, as ASF spreads through contact with infected animals, fluids, feed, or ticks, though it does not affect humans.
