South Dakota has launched a 30-member Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force to tackle rising incarceration rates and recidivism, following the state’s approval of a $650 million, 1,500-bed prison in Sioux Falls.
Appointed by Governor Larry Rhoden, the group includes state officials, tribal leaders, law enforcement, mental health experts, educators, and community advocates, with a focus on improving rehabilitation, reentry services, and culturally responsive programming.
The task force will analyze systemic issues, study effective models, and recommend how to best use the new facility’s capacity to reduce repeat offenses and support successful reintegration, especially for Native American populations who are overrepresented in the prison system.
