South Africa appoints panel to choose new top prosecutor ahead of Shamila Batohi’s 2026 retirement.
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has formed a selection panel to appoint a successor to National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi, who will retire in January 2026.
The panel, chaired by Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, includes leaders from key institutions and will oversee a transparent, open nomination process.
It will review candidates, conduct interviews, and submit three recommended names to the president within three months.
The goal is to ensure the new NDPP is independent, impartial, and free from political or business influence, upholding the rule of law and public trust in the National Prosecuting Authority.
