Portland Parks & Recreation is giving away 4,000 free trees this fall, up from 3,000 last year, funded by the Portland Clean Energy Fund.
The ninth year of the program targets heat-prone neighborhoods, especially east of the Willamette River.
Residents can pre-register at Portland.gov/free-yard-trees to select up to three trees, receive free mulch and planting guides, and attend events across the city.
Free delivery and planting help are available in select areas.
Trees must be planted on private or approved community property, not on streets or in containers.
Schools, businesses, and religious institutions can also apply.
Spots are limited and filling fast.
