An ICRC report reveals that over 80% of health facilities in eastern DR Congo’s North and South Kivu provinces are out of essential medicines, with 85% of 240 surveyed clinics lacking critical supplies and nearly 40% experiencing staff departures due to insecurity and funding gaps.
The health crisis has worsened since January amid renewed fighting by the M23 rebel group, displacing hundreds of thousands and increasing weapon-related injuries by 160% compared to 2024.
Over 3,400 such cases and 948 sexual violence cases were treated in the first half of 2025, while more than 80% of facilities lack humanitarian support, leaving patients to travel through combat zones for care.
The ICRC urges all parties to protect medical personnel and uphold humanitarian law.
