New Zealand launches Metro Water, a new regional water authority, in July 2026 to replace current council-run services.
The New Zealand government has approved the Metropolitan Water Services Delivery Plan, establishing Metro Water—a new multi-council-owned water organization set to begin operations on 1 July 2026.
Co-governed with mana whenua iwi Ngāti Toa Rangitira and Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika, Metro Water will deliver drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater services across Wellington, Porirua, Hutt City, Upper Hutt City, and Greater Wellington.
The organization will have greater funding, independence, and regional focus to improve services, replacing the current council-based model.
Foundation governance documents will be presented to partner councils for approval in December 2025.
Wellington Water Limited will continue operations until the transition.
