A new 96-bed block opens at University Hospital Limerick on Oct. 8, 2025, to ease emergency overcrowding.
A new 96-bed block at University Hospital Limerick, the only 24-hour emergency department in the mid-west region, is set to be fully operational by October 8, 2025, as part of a plan to ease chronic overcrowding.
The expansion, consisting of four 24-bed wards, follows a 2024 government plan to add 382 beds in the region by 2031 and a 2022 Deloitte report recommending 365 new beds.
Nearly 400 additional staff have been recruited to support the new capacity.
Despite the expansion, 84 patients remained on trolleys at UHL on October 7, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, with the HSE urging non-emergency patients to use alternative services.
The block will be officially launched on October 13 by Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.
