The Merck Foundation’s 2025 Africa Asia Luminary event launched in Banjul, Gambia, uniting global health leaders to address key medical challenges.
The 12th Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary 2025 event opened in Banjul, The Gambia, with President Adama Barrow presiding over the inauguration.
Organized by the Merck Foundation, the hybrid conference brought together over 6,000 participants from 70 countries, including 300 in person, to discuss global health challenges.
Keynote speakers included African First Ladies promoting the “More Than a Mother” initiative.
Since 2012, the foundation has awarded 2,400 scholarships to doctors in underserved specialties across 52 countries, with 94 going to Gambian healthcare professionals.
Sessions covered diabetes, hypertension, pediatric care, and respiratory medicine, while a media training session highlighted journalism’s role in advancing public health awareness.
