India’s ED launches QR-coded summons to fight fake arrest scams, stressing no "digital arrests" exist.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in India has introduced QR code-enabled summons to combat scams involving fake arrest notices. All official summons now include a unique QR code, passcode, signature, stamp, and contact details, allowing recipients to verify authenticity online 24 hours after issuance, excluding weekends and holidays. The ED stresses that "digital arrests" do not exist—arrests are physical and follow due process under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. Scammers have been impersonating ED officials to issue fraudulent notices, prompting the new system. Recipients can verify legitimacy by scanning the QR code or contacting Assistant Director Rahul Verma. The ED warns the public to remain vigilant against impersonators.
