India is diversifying energy imports post-2022 Ukraine invasion, despite buying Russian oil; U.S. imposes 50% tariffs to pressure Russia.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said India is beginning to diversify its energy imports despite recent purchases of discounted Russian oil, noting the shift started only in the past two to three years due to market conditions following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
He emphasized India’s sovereignty in energy decisions, clarified the U.S. is not dictating foreign policy, and stated the 50% tariff on Indian goods—including a 25% penalty on Russian oil imports—is part of broader efforts to pressure Russia to end the war.
While India maintains its energy choices are based on national interest and market conditions, the U.S. continues engaging allies and trading partners to reduce Russian energy trade.
