Former AFL player Shannon Cox sentenced to 10.5 years for 2024 crash that killed two women; he was high on meth and fatigued.
Former Collingwood AFL player Shannon Cox, 39, was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison for a 2024 head-on crash on Western Australia’s Brand Highway that killed two elderly women, Thelma Clausen, 82, and Coral Seinor, 83, who were en route to a Country Women’s Association event.
Cox, who had methamphetamine in his system and was fatigued, veered into oncoming traffic after a microsleep, striking a truck trailer before colliding with the women’s car.
He had prior convictions for driving under the influence of meth, was on a community-based order, and had breached bail by using drugs.
Cox pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter.
The victims’ families described the loss as devastating, with one daughter saying her mother was the “heart of the family.” Judge Stephen Lemonis noted Cox’s long history of addiction and repeated offenses, stating the deaths were preventable.
Cox must serve at least 8½ years before parole eligibility and faces a four-year driving ban.
