Edmonton Elks host free football camp for students affected by Alberta teachers' strike.
The Edmonton Elks are hosting a free six-day football camp at Commonwealth Stadium for high school players whose sports seasons were disrupted by Alberta’s teachers’ strike, which has closed 2,500 schools and affected 740,000 students.
The camp, organized with support from Football Alberta, filled 125 spots within hours and has 90 athletes on a waiting list.
It features instruction from professional Elks players, including all-star receiver Steven Dunbar Jr., to help student athletes maintain skills during the strike.
The labor dispute, now in its third day, centers on a government proposal for a 12% wage increase over four years and 3,000 new hires, which teachers’ leaders say falls short of addressing stagnant pay and overcrowded classrooms.
The provincial government has imposed a teacher lockout starting October 8, citing the need for predictable negotiations.
