Dunedin Hospital launches peer support program in ER, joining five other NZ hospitals in expanding mental health crisis care.
Dunedin Hospital has launched a peer support program in its emergency department, becoming the sixth major New Zealand hospital to adopt the initiative since its 2024 rollout.
Trained peer support workers—individuals with lived experience of mental health crises—provide empathy, connection, and guidance to patients, helping them feel heard and supported during emergencies.
The program, run by the Life Matters Suicide Trust and backed by Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey, aims to improve crisis response, reduce isolation, and link patients to community care.
It is part of a national strategy to expand mental health support in emergency settings, following successful implementations in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Waikato, with further rollouts planned.
