Dudley Council to remove nearly 500 unused grit bins to save money, approved in September 2025.
Dudley Council is considering removing nearly 500 grit bins to cut winter maintenance costs, as part of a broader review of outdated practices. Around 200 bins near regularly gritted roads are deemed unnecessary, and about 270 others—long unused or damaged—will be removed. Salt from decommissioned bins will refill roughly 350 remaining ones. The move follows declining public use, attributed to milder winters and changing behavior. The council maintains 3,500 tonnes of grit for eight gritting lorries. The plan was approved in September 2025.
