Construction has begun on a $3.5 billion AirTrain project at Newark Liberty International Airport, replacing the aging 1996 system with a modern, automated people-mover.
The new 2.5-mile system, set for completion by 2030, will feature larger platforms, real-time signage, natural lighting, and seven five-car trains with double the current capacity.
Designed to serve up to 50,000 passengers daily, it will improve connectivity between terminals, reduce travel time, and support future expansion, including potential extensions and a new Terminal B.
The current AirTrain will remain in service until the new system is fully operational.
