Bangladesh wins first UNESCO presidency in narrow vote after India and South Korea withdraw.
Bangladesh has secured its first-ever presidency of UNESCO’s 43rd General Conference, with Ambassador Khondker M Talha winning a narrow 30-27 vote over Japan.
The election followed withdrawals by India and South Korea, leaving Talha—Bangladesh’s permanent delegate to UNESCO and ambassador to France, Monaco, and Côte d’Ivoire—as the sole contender.
He will succeed Romania’s Simona Mirela Miculescu at the conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
The achievement, hailed as a landmark by top officials, highlights Bangladesh’s growing role in global education, culture, and science policy.
