Australia gives $800K to SPA for sheep strategy without competition, sparking criticism over transparency and funding choices.
The Australian government awarded $800,000 to Sheep Producers Australia (SPA) for a national sheep and wool strategy via a non-competitive grant, with no input from wool industry groups.
The funds, from the live sheep phase-out package, launched SPA’s Future Flock project, including a Western Australia roadmap.
DAFF said SPA was chosen for its readiness and to avoid delays, citing prior consultations.
Senator Matt Canavan criticized the lack of transparency and competition, noting Wool Producers Australia learned of the initiative days before launch and received no funding.
Canavan also questioned a separate $2.2 million grant to the WA Shearing Industry Association, calling it poorly targeted with unclear job outcomes.
