An undocumented Salvadoran immigrant pleaded guilty to a fatal 2025 hit-and-run in Columbia, South Carolina, resulting in a one-year sentence and deportation.
Rosali Fernandez-Cruz, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run causing death in the April 2025 crash that killed 21-year-old University of South Carolina student Nate Baker in Columbia.
The incident occurred when Fernandez-Cruz, driving a truck, struck Baker, a motorcycle rider, at the intersection of Blossom and Assembly streets.
He fled the scene on foot but was apprehended half a mile away.
Sentenced to one year in prison with credit for 131 days served, he is set for release in March 2026 and will be deported after serving his term.
Three other charges were dropped.
The case was transferred to the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, drawing criticism from local prosecutors.
Baker’s family said they forgave Fernandez-Cruz.
