UK lawmaker Jack Lopresti urges legal change to allow citizens to join Ukraine’s military amid war and manpower shortages.
Former Conservative MP and British Army reservist Jack Lopresti is urging the UK government to change laws banning citizens from serving in foreign armies, particularly Ukraine’s forces, amid Russia’s ongoing war.
Lopresti, who served in Afghanistan and trained Ukrainian troops, says veterans with combat experience should be allowed to help Ukraine, which faces severe manpower shortages and increasing pressure from Russian forces, including North Korean troops.
Despite a 1870 law that could lead to prosecution for such service, Lopresti and shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel argue for policy reform, citing Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics and the need for stronger UK support.
Over 40 Britons have died in the conflict since 2022.
