Two Texas prison officers were charged after an inmate died in a burning cell following their refusal to restrain him properly.
Two former Texas prison officers, Crystal Janelle West and William Eugene Romero, have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of an inmate who died in a burning cell at the Bill Clements Unit near Amarillo.
According to an anonymous TDCJ source, the inmate set a mattress on fire and refused to place his hands in a food tray slot for restraint.
Romero, a former lieutenant, reportedly refused to open the slot due to safety concerns, and West, a former sergeant, later opened it but did not attempt to rescue the inmate.
The inmate was found unresponsive and pronounced dead.
West faces manslaughter charges, a second-degree felony, while Romero is charged with criminally negligent homicide, a state jail felony.
Both have been terminated, and the case is under investigation by the Office of the Inspector General and the Special Prosecution Unit.
