A reopened inquest in Brisbane is re-examining the 1978 triple murder of three friends on an outback motorbike trip, nearly 47 years after their bodies were found near Spear Creek, Australia.
The victims—Karen Edwards, Tim Thomson, and Gordon Twaddle—were last seen with an unidentified man in a brown and white Toyota Land Cruiser at Mount Isa’s Moondarra Caravan Park on October 5.
All were shot execution-style with a .22 calibre weapon.
A $250,000 reward remains active.
Bruce John Preston, who admitted stealing one motorcycle and was charged in 2019, had murder charges dropped in 2023 but will testify.
The inquest, led by Coroner David O’Connell, is reviewing original and new cold case evidence, including testimony from up to 40 witnesses, and has accepted that a dark-haired, bearded man in the Land Cruiser likely committed the killings.
The hearing is expected to last nine days.
