Swedish donated fishing nets are shielding Ukraine’s front lines from drone attacks.
Swedish fishing nets, donated by fishermen and families in Sweden—especially on the Aland Islands—are being used as critical anti-drone defenses on Ukraine’s front lines.
Since 2022, Ludvig Ramestam’s nonprofit Operation Change has shipped about 400 tons of retired nets, initially for camouflage but repurposed to absorb FPV drone explosions.
The nets protect roads and vehicles in eastern Ukraine, complementing jamming devices and net launchers called “Ptashkas.” Though not foolproof, they’ve already saved lives, with one vehicle surviving a drone strike.
The effort reflects strong Swedish public support for Ukraine, driven by historical memories and environmental fishing restrictions in Sweden.
