Students find artifacts from 1800s Chinese community during Bozeman dig.
Montana State University students, guided by professors and the Extreme History Project, conducted an archaeological dig on October 5, 2025, in a Bozeman parking lot set for hotel redevelopment.
Under rainy conditions, about 35 students uncovered pottery, glass, bones, beads, and a golden figurine at a site once part of the city’s red-light district and home to a Chinese community in the late 1800s.
Using ground-penetrating radar and historical maps, researchers sought material evidence of marginalized residents whose lives were underrepresented in written records.
The excavation, made possible by a developer’s construction delay, aims to reveal insights into diet, health, and economic conditions of past inhabitants.
