South Africa launches inquiry into RAF over fraud, mismanagement, and governance failures amid rising accident costs.
South Africa’s Parliament has launched a parliamentary inquiry into the Road Accident Fund (RAF) amid concerns over fraud, mismanagement, and financial impropriety.
The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) is investigating the fund’s claims system, governance, and accountability, following repeated failures to provide accurate information and submit annual reports.
Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa testified that reckless driving, including drunk driving, drives high accident rates, contributing to the RAF’s massive financial burden on the state, with about 12,000 deaths annually.
The inquiry, prompted by a collapsed board and unresolved audit issues, aims to address systemic failures and inform structural reforms, with new legislation nearing approval.
