PAHO launches 2025–2030 plan to fight NCDs in the Americas with policy, prevention, and health system support.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has adopted a new 2025–2030 Plan of Action to combat noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), the Americas’ leading cause of death, during its 62nd Directing Council. The plan targets major risk factors like tobacco, alcohol, poor diet, and physical inactivity, aiming to reduce preventable deaths through health promotion, primary care integration, and improved surveillance. It calls for fiscal policies, warning labels on unhealthy foods, marketing restrictions, expanded vaccination and screening, and digital tools for data use. A whole-of-government approach is emphasized, with progress tracked via biennial reviews through 2031. PAHO will support countries in securing resources to strengthen health systems and advance regional health and development goals.
