A Louisiana judge lets AG Murrill skip defending the state’s two Black-majority districts, preserving the map ahead of a key Supreme Court vote on race-based redistricting.
A Louisiana judge denied a lawsuit by Black lawmakers demanding Attorney General Liz Murrill defend the state’s congressional map, which creates two majority-Black districts.
Murrill, who previously supported the map but now challenges race-based redistricting, said she has legal discretion and forcing her to defend legislation would disrupt the separation of powers.
The ruling allows her to focus on upcoming Supreme Court arguments on October 15 over the constitutionality of race-conscious redistricting, which could affect the Voting Rights Act.
The current map remains in place for now.
