India's top court backs SBI's fraud charge against Reliance Communications, holding Anil Ambani liable for ₹2,929 crore loss.
The Bombay High Court has upheld the State Bank of India’s classification of Reliance Communications’ loan account as a fraud, affirming industrialist Anil Ambani’s liability as a person in control of the company.
The court rejected Ambani’s challenge to SBI’s June 2025 order, finding no procedural flaws and ruling that written submissions satisfied natural justice, even without a personal hearing.
It emphasized that promoters with actual control, like Ambani, can be held accountable when a company’s account is declared fraudulent.
The decision supports SBI’s actions based on a forensic audit and a CBI investigation into alleged fund misappropriation, which reportedly caused a loss of Rs 2,929.05 crore.
