India launched its first domestic gas carrier, the Shivalik, to cut shipping costs and boost maritime independence.
India has bolstered its maritime self-reliance with the induction of the VLGC Shivalik, its first large gas carrier under the Indian flag, formally welcomed at Visakhapatnam Port on October 6, 2025.
Built in South Korea, the 82,000 CBM vessel completed its maiden voyage carrying over 46,000 metric tonnes of LPG from the UAE.
Operated by the Shipping Corporation of India, the Shivalik joins two other VLGCs in the fleet, enhancing India’s ability to transport critical energy cargo domestically.
The move supports Prime Minister Modi’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and broader goals to reduce reliance on foreign carriers, save $75 billion annually in freight costs, and expand Indian-flag tonnage.
The government is advancing shipbuilding through a Rs 69,725 crore package, an extended Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme, and a Rs 25,000 crore Maritime Development Fund, while also launching the Bharat Container Shipping Line and upgrading port infrastructure to boost export-import efficiency and create jobs.
