India investigates claim that a Gujarat man joined Russian forces to avoid drug-related prison, allegedly captured by Ukraine after defecting.
India is verifying reports that a 22-year-old Indian national from Gujarat, Majoti Sahil Mohamed Hussein, was captured by Ukrainian forces after allegedly joining the Russian military to avoid a seven-year prison sentence for a drug offense.
According to Ukraine’s 63rd Mechanized Brigade, Hussein, who studied in Russia, underwent 16 days of training and fought for three days before surrendering due to a dispute with his commander and lack of promised pay.
He claims he joined under duress, not ideology, and wishes to remain in Ukraine.
The Indian Embassy in Kyiv is assessing the situation, but no official confirmation has been received from Ukraine.
