Fiji opens exhibition marking 55 years of independence with historical artifacts and genealogy access.
A special exhibition at Fiji’s National Archives opened on October 6, 2025, in Suva to mark 55 years of independence from Britain, highlighting the nation’s political, social, and cultural journey since 1970.
Organized by the National Archives and launched by Information Minister Lynda Tabuya, the event features historical documents, photographs, and artifacts, including records from the 1874 cession and the independence era.
It offers public access to genealogy services for descendants of Indian indentured laborers and European settlers using a database of over 60,000 names.
The exhibition, running through Thursday, will move to Albert Park on Friday to coincide with Fiji Day celebrations, including a military parade.
Officials emphasized the importance of preserving national memory, promoting transparency, and encouraging public engagement with government records.
