At 38, Novak Djokovic overcame extreme heat and physical strain, including vomiting during a changeover, to defeat Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in a three-set match at the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters, advancing to the fourth round.
The four-time Shanghai champion credited his resilience to the passionate support of his fan base in China, known as the “Nole-Fam,” whose energy he said fueled his comeback.
Djokovic, who has won a record six titles in Shanghai and Beijing, made efforts to connect culturally by practicing Chinese characters and signing his name in Chinese on a camera lens.
His victory came as top contender Jannik Sinner retired due to cramping, giving Djokovic a psychological edge.
