16 Democratic AGs oppose DHS plan to limit student visas, citing education and economic harm.
A coalition of 16 Democratic attorneys general, led by California’s Rob Bonta, is opposing a U.S. Department of Homeland Security proposal to limit international student visas to four years with a 240-day extension, calling the rule inflexible and unjustified.
They argue it could disrupt students’ education and harm universities and local economies, noting most undergraduates take longer than four years to graduate.
The DHS says the rule addresses safety and cost concerns, while a separate Trump-era H-1B visa fee may further hinder students’ post-graduation work opportunities.
California’s international students contribute $6.4 billion to the state and support over 55,000 jobs.
The coalition urges the DHS to withdraw the rule.
