Coastal erosion threatens Newcastle’s Cooks Hill Surf Club, prompting a draft plan to relocate it and alter access, sparking criticism over rushed consultation.
Coastal erosion threatens the Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club and surrounding areas in Newcastle, prompting the City of Newcastle to release a draft coastal management plan.
The plan identifies the stretch from Bar Beach to Merewether Beach as high-risk, with potential instability in severe weather and long-term threats to homes, public spaces, and infrastructure by 2120.
Proposed measures include relocating the club, reducing access to Bathers Way and Empire Park, closing parts of the skate park, and altering traffic on Memorial Drive.
Club president Michael Clancy criticized the eight-week consultation as rushed and inadequate, citing poor location, confusing surveys, and insufficient engagement, emphasizing the club’s 110-year legacy.
The council maintains it has provided broad outreach, including face-to-face sessions and mailed materials, and stresses all options are conceptual and subject to further input.
Public feedback is being collected until the consultation ends.
