Chicago bans federal immigration raids on city property without a warrant, calling it a defense against federal overreach.
On October 6, 2025, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order creating "ICE-free zones" on city-owned properties, banning federal immigration agents from using schools, libraries, parks, and other public spaces for enforcement operations without a warrant.
The move, part of the Protecting Chicago Initiative, responds to federal crackdowns under the Trump Administration, including Operation Midway Blitz and a controversial raid that led to over 1,000 arrests in Illinois.
The city will post signage and implement barriers to block federal use of previously used staging sites, with private property owners encouraged to participate.
Johnson condemned the deployment of National Guard troops in the city as an "invasion" and vowed legal challenges to federal actions.
The order does not affect lawful, non-enforcement uses of city property.
