Australia won’t require climate impact assessments under new environmental laws, opting for emissions disclosure and abatement plans instead.
Australia’s revised environmental laws will not include a climate trigger, Environment Minister Murray Watt confirmed, ruling out requiring climate change impacts to be assessed under the EPBC Act.
The government instead will follow the Samuel review’s recommendations, mandating project proponents to disclose scope one and two emissions and submit abatement plans.
Watt said existing policies, like the safeguard mechanism, already address emissions from major projects.
New EPBC legislation is expected in parliament by end of 2025 to speed up clean energy and housing approvals, but passage depends on support from the Greens or Coalition.
Regional planning pilots are underway in four states to identify development "go zones" and "no-go zones."
Australia no requerirá evaluaciones de impacto climático en virtud de las nuevas leyes ambientales, optando por la divulgación de emisiones y planes de reducción.
