Australia launches $31.5M grants for WA sheep farmers and transporters affected by sea export ban.
The Albanese government has launched two grant programs worth $31.5 million under the $139.7 million Sheep Industry Transition Assistance Package to support Western Australian farmers and livestock transporters affected by the phase-out of live sheep exports by sea.
The $30 million Farm Business Transition Program offers up to $75,000 per applicant to help producers shift to alternative farming practices, with $20 million available now and $10 million in 2026.
The $1.5 million Livestock Transport Industry Transition Program provides up to $40,000 per applicant for transporters to pivot to other services, covering planning, training, and equipment changes.
Applicants must match grant amounts dollar-for-dollar.
Critics, including federal and state agricultural leaders, say the support is inadequate amid a 30–40% drop in transport turnover and declining sheep numbers, warning of broader rural community impacts.
Applications open October 7 and close December 1.
