Akron clergy demand police reforms after no indictment in 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker’s shooting.
Akron religious leaders have demanded police reforms after a grand jury declined to indict officer Davon Fields in the November 2024 shooting of 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker, who was shot twice in the back and once in the arm.
Body camera footage showed officers approaching Tucker with weapons drawn, and a handgun was found in his coat.
The clergy called for stronger oversight, including empowering the Citizens’ Police Oversight Board with enforcement authority, banning officers’ personal long-range rifles in duty, mandating 90-day unpaid suspensions and psychological evaluations for officers with multiple use-of-force incidents, and placing officers involved in fatal shootings on unpaid leave.
The Akron Police Department will conduct an internal investigation reviewed by the city’s auditor.
Community leaders remain skeptical of reform, citing weak policies and past failures, and say they may pursue another charter amendment if city council does not act.
The mayor’s office declined to comment.
